Background

For the past 30 years, the Graphics Department of the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) has been responsible for many of the MBTA’s maps. This includes the Official System Map, Rapid Transit Map, Commuter Rail Map, bus maps, and neighborhood maps. When needed, the Boston Region MPO has been contracted to update and correct these maps.

Objective(s)

Beginning in the spring of 2025 and until end of 2029, the MBTA will annually add or change a predetermined set of maps to align with the MBTA’s Bus Network Redesign effort. This effort has repercussions throughout the system and requires many maps to be updated. Updates to the MBTA Rapid Transit Map, as well as Neighborhood Maps, Bus Neighborhood Maps, Bus Schedule Maps, and Bus Shelter Maps will be required.
