Geospatial Data

The CTPS Data Resources group develops and maintains databases of spatial and tabular data primarily for use by the agency's transportation planning staff. These databases include standard reference data published by the state's Office of Geographic Information (MassGIS), the United States Geological Survey, the U.S. Census Bureau and other organizations. The group maintains the Massachusetts statewide rail data layer, which includes active passenger, freight, and MBTA commuter rail and rapid transit railways, along with abandoned rail lines. The Data Resources group also develops tabular and spatial databases for specific in-house projects, as well as for client agencies.

Demographic Data

CTPS maintains a large database of U.S. census data from 1980, 1990, 2000, and 2010. Some commonly requested tables of data for all Massachusetts cities and towns are available for downloading in Microsoft Excel format, as are more detailed demographic profiles for the 97 communities in the MPO region.

Express Highway Volumes

Traffic flow diagrams have been developed by CTPS for all ramp and mainline sections of the express highways in the metropolitan Boston region. The diagrams show hourly traffic volumes from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and average weekday daily traffic (AWDT).

The peak-period volumes are from a recent year; the AWDT volumes are from all of the years that ramp counts were performed by the MassDOT Highway Division for the given highways. The traffic volumes are available on a highway-by-highway basis in numerical order, with state numbered routes followed by interstate routes.

Express-Highways: Locations of Count Stations

Federal regulations require that mainline locations and ramps be counted for all express highways in Massachusetts. The diagrams of the location of traffic count stations identify the count station locations for all of the state’s express highways. Coverage stations are identified with four digit codes. Loop stations are identified with four digit codes plus the word "loop" to identify them as continuous count locations. Ramp stations are identified with five digit codes. The locations of the various count stations are presented on a highway-by-highway basis. The highways are presented in numerical order, with state numbered routes followed by interstate routes.

Model-Based Data

The MPO's regional travel demand model simulates travel on the eastern Massachusetts transit and highway system. It contains MBTA rail and bus lines, and private express bus carriers. The transit data include service frequency, routing, travel times, and fares. The highway data include express highways, principal arterial roadways, and many minor arterial and local roadways. The regional model set is used to provide detailed information relating to transit ridership demand and traffic on the roadways.

Freight-Related Information

Information on freight transportation in the Boston region, which includes an inventory of the freight transportation infrastructure and operations, is available on this website. It also includes descriptions of the existing and projected movements of freight in the area and provides a list of stakeholder-identified freight transportation issues that may be within the purview of the MPO.
