Introduction

The purpose of this database is to assist seniors and persons with disabilities who live or travel in the MPO region with finding transportation services that meet their needs. The services listed in the database are open to the public and are provided by organizations that primarily serve the elderly and others with limited mobility.

Disclaimer

The data were obtained directly from provider websites and council on aging websites and reflect the information that was available at the time the database was last updated. To verify that information about services and costs is still current, please call the appropriate provider.

Senior Transportation Information That Is Not Included in the Database

Similar transportation services are available in some areas, but are not included in the database because their service is limited to specific populations. These include:

  • MassHealth Medical Transportation Services

MassHealth provides medical transportation for individuals who have been approved for Medicaid who are unable to use public transportation and do not have private means of transportation.

Transportation must be to and from a MassHealth provider for a MassHealth-reimbursable service, and may be available for long-term, ongoing services such as physical therapy. The medical provider must submit a PT-1 form directly to MassHealth on behalf of the individual, at least a week in advance. If approved, an individual calls the MassHealth Customer Service Center at 800-841-2900 to schedule a ride.

  • Veterans Transportation

Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Volunteer VA Hospital Transportation coordinates limited, complimentary transportation services for veterans to the Brockton, West Roxbury, and Jamaica Plain VA hospitals. Service is available Monday through Friday for appointment times between 8:30 AM and noon. Please note that riders may need to wait for an extended time after their appointment for the van for the return trip.

Riders must be ambulatory or require only a little assistance getting on or off of the van. Unfortunately, the van cannot accommodate wheelchair patients.

Appointments are on a first-come, first-served basis and must be made a minimum of two weeks in advance. Because of high demand, DAV cannot accommodate appointments made less than two weeks in advance. To make or change a ride reservation, call 774-826-2264 between 8:00 AM and noon, Monday through Friday.

  • America Cancer Society (ACS) – Road to Recovery Program

The ACS Road to Recovery program provides free transportation to cancer patients for medical appointments related to their diagnosis. This may include treatment, tests, medical procedures, and follow-up appointments. Trained ACS volunteer drivers donate their time and the use of their personal vehicle for transportation, Monday through Friday. This service is for individuals who have exhausted family and community resources and have no other means of transportation.

Advance notice of four business days is required for all rides. Patients must be ambulatory and able to get in and out of their home and vehicle under their own power. People using canes, walkers, lightweight wheelchairs, or oxygen are eligible for services, but must be accompanied by another person for assistance. Service is subject to the availability of volunteer drivers.

To schedule a ride, call 800-227-2345.

  • RSVP Rides for Veterans

This is a free service, sponsored by the Norfolk County Commissioners’ Office, which offers rides for veterans (provided by volunteers) to one-time or recurring medical appointments. Rides may also be available for nonmedical trips, with medical appointments taking priority. Trips must originate within Norfolk County. Drivers take veterans to healthcare providers in and around Norfolk County, including VA hospitals in Brockton, Jamaica Plain, and West Roxbury. Trip times are flexible within reason.

Veterans must be able to get in and out of a car by themselves and be able to walk unassisted. Those using walkers, canes, crutches, lightweight wheelchairs, or oxygen tanks are eligible for service; however, if they need assistance walking or handling any of this equipment, they are required to be accompanied by another person who can provide assistance. Veterans are referred primarily through their local Veteran’s Services Officer (VSO).

Call the Norfolk County RSVP volunteer program at 781-329-5728 or email rsvp@norfolkcounty.org to arrange a ride. Please give as much advance notice as possible.
